The Amazon

The worlds most water rich river, enormous rainforest and some of the last unexplored areas of our planet.

A visit to the Amazon is an adventure! You’re in, and part of, natures stunning scenery every second. In the Amazon the adventure is experienced through all senses, all the time. The Amazon rainforest covers an area of 5.5 million square kilometers, representing almost 6 times the area of Scandinavia! The area has also been nicknamed “The Green Hell” because of its unpredictable size and impermeability. In earlier days people went into the forest and never came out again. But you are safe with us.

It is obviously impossible to describe the Amazonian flora and fauna, especially because it is still far from fully understood. One can decide to go there to experience the amazing bird life, the multifarious flora or something completely else.

The rainforest extends into Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, thereby affecting the majority of the Latin American nations. This means that you can have very different experiences depending on which part of the Amazon you choose to visit.

The rainforest is not, as some imagine, inhabited by numerous Indians. The relatively few tribes live scattered in the vast area and they have relatively little contact with the outside world. The jungle dwellers encountered during sailing trips in the area, the so-called ” caboclos “, a mixture between Indians and whites, live a hard life on the banks of the small tributaries. They live of small agriculture, fishing and of selling for example jute or nuts to passing traders.
